Human Food that’s Safe for Dogs to Eat

A little human food can be quite safe for dogs and even provide vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients. However, moderation is key, and these foods should only be given as occasional treats, not as a substitute for a balanced diet. Some examples of human food that dogs can eat are: 

• Lean meat, such as chicken, turkey, beef, or lamb, without fat or cooked bones 

• Fish, such as salmon, tuna, or sardines, cooked and deboned 

• Eggs, cooked and plain 

• Peanut butter, unsalted and without xylitol or artificial additives 

• Carrots, apples (without seeds), blueberries, bananas, in small amounts 

• Cheese, plain and low-fat, in small amounts 

• Yogurt, plain, unsweetened and low-fat 

• A small piece of toast or a plain biscuit 

Human Food Our Dogs Should Never Eat

Some human food can be toxic or dangerous for our four-legged friends. These foods should never be given to our pets, and should be kept out of their reach. Some examples of human food that dogs can’t eat include: 

• Chocolate, coffee, tea or any product containing caffeine 

• Grapes, raisins, currants 

• Onions, garlic, leeks, chives 

• Citrus fruits 

• Macadamia nuts, walnuts, pistachios 

• Avocado (flesh or seed) 

• Alcohol 

• Xylitol (often found in sugar-free gum, candy, or peanut butter)  

• Cooked bones, as they can splinter and cause choking or internal damage 

• Fat trimmings, as they can cause pancreatitis 

• Cooked dough, as it can expand in the stomach and cause bloating or twisting 

• Spicy foods 

Sharing a treat with our pets can be a time of enjoyment and bonding. Just make sure you know what is safe and avoid any risks. Also, avoid making big changes in their diet – even with safe foods, sudden changes can result in an upset stomach.  

And remember, a healthy-fed pet is a happy pet, so make sure their diet is sensible and balanced.
